Small act of kindness to lift spirits of jobseekers

Owners of a locally owned and operated pop-up coffee cart, joined by Mayor Kevin Greene, handed out coffee to community members at Centrelink Hurstville this morning thanks to Georges River Council.

Council Mayor Kevin Greene described the current health crisis as a testing time for people, both financially and emotionally, and called for the community to remain united.

“What we’ve seen this week at Centrelink locations across the country due to the COVID-19 health crisis is quite moving, and while a free coffee won’t change the world, we hope that it might lift the spirits of people here today who find themselves queuing for assistance,” said Mayor Greene.

“The next few months are going to be difficult for everyone, and for some people in our community, the economic impact is going to be particularly hard. Council recognises this and we are currently looking at options to support both residents and businesses affected by the current crisis.

“Council has already activated a number of relief measures which include allowing restaurants that previously had no consent to deliver take-away to do so, and we’ve relaxed enforcement of both parking and delivery hours to allow for increased take-way food trading and access to food, beverage and grocery stores.

“There are a number of assistance options for Council payments that are covered under Council’s Debt Management and Hardship policy. Should people be facing financial hardship, they can apply for these payment options through Council’s website.

“People can also find a range of information regarding changes to Council services as well as links to other service providers and support groups.

“While people may be feeling isolated and anxious during this time, I’d like to reassure everyone that Council is doing what it can to support you. You’re not alone, and together we will get through this.”
