Seniors Festival to showcase huge line-up of workshops and events

12/02/2019

Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene officially launched Council’s Seniors Festival at Hurstville’s Marana Auditorium on Tuesday 12 February.

Running until 27 February, this year’s theme of ‘Love Your Life’ encourages local seniors to get out, get active and be social.

The festival will see Council partnering with and supporting many local seniors’ service providers and groups to showcase a range of programs available in the Georges River area.

Mayor Greene encouraged all seniors to make the most of the festival offerings throughout February. “This year’s festival is a wonderful opportunity for local seniors to sample some of the great programs on offer in the area,” he said.

“We have 24 events across the month, catering to a range of interests, as well as a diverse line-up of special events being run especially for Seniors Festival.

“Hurstville Community Gardens will play host to organic gardening workshops and an art class in the garden. “Council’s libraries will also be hosting a range of information workshops tailored for seniors including a ‘money matters’ financial advice seminar, a strata living talk, an introductory workshop to ancestry.com, an ukulele class for beginners and a chair yoga class.

“We also have a range of social events lined-up including a multicultural seniors line dancing social party at Hurstville Seniors Centre, with 40% of proceeds raised going to Alzheimer’s Australia,” he added.

The festival launch also coincided with the unveiling of Council’s new 2019 Seniors Program calendar, which has been developed in conjunction with local seniors groups.

“Council is pleased to be providing local seniors with a new central source of information detailing ongoing programs throughout the year,” said Mayor Greene.

“These programs are run by local seniors groups at Council venues across the Georges River area, with our venues provided at no cost to the groups as part of our seniors program,” he added.
