Rates consultation receives strong community engagement

Georges River Council’s community consultation phase for its ‘Changes to your rates’ project closed on Sunday 17 November 2019, after receiving more than 5,700 responses from the community.

Council’s comprehensive community engagement plan ensured residents could share feedback in a variety of ways, including online at Your Say Georges River, using hard copy surveys, via a telephone survey or in person.

Mayor of Georges River Council Kevin Greene thanked the community for their participation in the consultation phase of the project, and said that the extended consultation period allowed ample opportunity for people to share their feedback.

“We aimed to make it as easy as possible for residents to have their say, while also catering to the different needs of our community with regards to communication from Council.

“Council distributed more than 50,000 information brochures and reply paid surveys to ratepayers in the local government area, and residents could opt to share feedback online via Council’s Your Say Georges River platform.

“5,700 hard copy surveys were returned to Council, and a telephone survey of 600 randomly selected residents was completed. In addition, more than 600 online surveys and submissions have been completed.

“We also hosted seven information sessions at different locations in the local area, where attendees were given a comprehensive presentation on Council’s proposed rate changes.

“Drop-in sessions were also held at Peakhurst Night Market and Kyle Bay.

“We are currently analysing responses and it is anticipated that a report will be presented to Council in early 2020,” added Mayor Greene.

Opportunities for community engagement were communicated to local residents using a wide variety of Council communication channels including local media, advertising, fortnightly e-newsletters, the Council website and Your Say Georges River website, Council’s social media channels, and smart signage at Hurstville Train Station and in Council’s Customer Service Centres.
