Patience and cooperation required for return to sport

29/05/2020

With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions there is much speculation around sport and how teams and clubs will return to competitive play. The Georges River local government area enjoys strong levels of participation in a range of sports, with each requiring different considerations in response to the pandemic.

Georges River Council is encouraging parents in particular to be mindful of the complexities involved for each sporting code and club, and the additional responsibilities placed on everyone to ensure community safety is maintained.

Craig Kiely from the St George Football Association said that community sport will be a different experience for everyone this season, and people will need to continue to be patient and responsible as sporting clubs work towards full resumption of play.

“We will continue to take advice from government authorities and have worked closely with our sporting bodies to develop a set of return to training guidelines to support our participants and clubs, in considering their return to training,” said Mr Kiely.

“It is our shared responsibility and objective that everyone understands and follows the NSW Public Health Orders and the guidelines that follow, in the interests of everyone’s health and safety.

“This might mean that parents are not able to stand on the sidelines while their kids are training, and we hope that parents will be understanding and cooperative.

“Some clubs will commence training this week under the Level 1 guidelines, which is limited to groups of no more than 10 with no contact in an outdoor setting.

“It is imperative that community members work together to support our sporting club volunteers and committees in remaining compliant so that we don’t end up jeopardising or delaying further our full return to training and competition,” added Mr Kiely.

The next phase for sporting clubs is the development of ‘Return to Play’ guidelines, to allow for a return to competitive play.
