New exhibition finds beauty in everyday moments

Nature lovers and art lovers alike will enjoy the latest offering from artist Sonya Jackson with her exhibition Meander which will open at the Dragon’s Lair Gallery at Hurstville Museum & Gallery on Sunday 6 May at 2.30pm.

The exhibition will present a mix of paintings and drawings which explore captured moments from the artist’s local surroundings, including the many birds that visit the eucalypts opposite her home in Maroubra.

Sonya, who has a background in graphic design, completed her Diploma in Fine Arts at TAFE NSW St George College of Fine Arts in 2017, and was a finalist in the 2016 and 2017 Hunters Hill Art Prize.

“Painting and drawing, to me, is about living in the moment. It’s a snapshot of fleeting experiences, of seeing and responding to little things of wonder,” she said.

“It provides not only solace but time out in a hectic world to reset, explore and find the beauty in everyday moments.

“My philosophy is to live artfully and appreciate even the small things in daily life, by slowing down and embracing each moment and capturing those moments with mark making.

“The underlying principle is to capture the subtle sense within the landscape, the movement, the energy and the perception of time,” she added.

Meander runs at Dragon’s Lair Gallery from 5 – 27 May 2018, with the exhibition opening on Sunday 6 May at 2.30pm. All welcome! Please RSVP online from the ‘what’s on’ page at www.georgesriver.nsw.gov.au/HMG
