New Regional Aquatic Facility could offer diverse sport and recreation experiences

At its Extraordinary Meeting last night, Georges River Council reaffirmed its decision to investigate further the feasibility of building a new Regional Aquatic Facility at Todd Park, within the Carss Park Sport and Recreation Precinct.
The Extraordinary Meeting was called after a rescission motion was lodged following the resolution of Council on Monday 25 May 2020 to progress further technical investigations for Todd Park.
Council considered the final Regional Aquatic Facility Site Suitability and Feasibility Study (the Study) prepared by industry experts Otium Planning Group, which reviewed four potential locations for a new Regional Aquatic Facility in the Georges River area.
The Study recommended Todd Park in Blakehurst as the top ranking site, potentially providing the Georges River community with access to a state-of-the-art Regional Aquatic Facility. This facility could feature a mix of aquatic areas, health and wellness facilities and social amenities.
Mayor of Georges River Council Kevin Greene said that an aquatic facility at Todd Park would have the potential to offer multi-faceted sport and recreational experiences, to bring something completely new to the local community.
“The facility could cater to a much broader section of the community than aquatic centres which are currently available in the area, and offer a place for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy sport and recreation into the future”, said Mayor Greene.
“A multi-use 50 metre, 10 lane pool catering for both competitive and recreational swimmers, a learn to swim and leisure pool, and toddler’s water area, are possible facilities for the site.
“Many local children would be delighted to experience a water play and splash pad and waterslides and adventure water area, and the centre could offer health and wellness amenities featuring a gym, sauna and spa,” added Mayor Greene.
Community meeting areas, a weights room, café and areas for community socialising could also be incorporated into a new Regional Aquatic Facility.
On the basis of the report’s recommendation, Council will now commence the next stage of detailed technical investigations including service, utility, geotechnical and civil investigations for Todd Park.
Council commissioned Otium Planning Group to conduct the Regional Aquatic Facility Site Suitability and Feasibility Study in 2019 to inform its plans for development of a potential future third local aquatic facility, to better meet the current and future needs of the Georges River community.
