Mayoral Column – Thank you to our carers in Georges River

This week, we thank and applaud the 14,000+ Georges River community members (11.8% of our population) who are carers, providing unpaid assistance to a family member or friend.

Running from 10 to 16 October 2021, National Carers Week is a time to recognise and celebrate the 11% of Australians who provide care and support for someone with a disability, mental health or chronic condition, terminal illness, alcohol or drug issue, or who is frail aged.

This year’s theme is ‘Millions of Reasons to Care’ which aims to bring attention to the 2.65 million carers around the country.

Anyone can become a carer at any time, and National Carers Week is an opportunity to raise community awareness about the diversity of carers and their roles.

Council is committed to supporting carers and the people they care for, by creating an inclusive community for everyone who lives, works or visits Georges River.

This month, we are hosting online consultation sessions to hear from people with disability and their carers, and to listen to their needs and concerns. This will assist Council as we update our Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), which guides us in creating a more accessible environment that supports people with disability to be involved in community life.
We also invite the wider community to complete an online survey to tell us how Council can make our services, facilities, activities and information more accessible.

Council works closely with a number of carers’ support services, and we have developed a Community Support Services Directory which can be found on our website.

One of the organisations we work with is Carers NSW, who are hosting a range of free webinars, as well as self-care and wellbeing workshops for carers this week.

As we celebrate National Carers Week, I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank the carers in our community and to participate in Council’s activities, such as the current consultation for our DIAP.

Together, we can ensure Georges River is inclusive and supports carers and the people they care for, providing them with opportunities to fully participate and enjoy our fantastic social, business and community life.
