Mayoral Column – Stay at Home Orders extended and additional restrictions

July has proven to be another test for Sydney with the extension of Stay at Home Orders and additional restrictions in place. Due to the surge in COVID-19 cases, I urge people to keep doing the right thing across our community.

Look out for one another and the more vulnerable members of the community. This includes our elderly citizens who could benefit from a call to see if they need help with groceries and essential items.

To prevent further transmission of the virus, stay home. Exceptions to this order include shopping for food or other essential goods and services, medical care or compassionate needs (people can leave home to have a COVID-19 vaccination unless you have been identified as a close contact) and only one visitor can enter another residence to fulfil carers’ responsibilities or provide care or assistance, or for compassionate reasons. Exercise outdoors is limited to two people (excluding members of the same household) and in your Local Government Area or within 10kms of home, with no carpooling between non-household members. You can leave home for essential work, or education, where you cannot work or study from home.

To ensure everyone’s safety, please check in and out through the Service NSW app wherever you go. When you do leave home wear a mask and maintain a 1.5 metre distance from others, when conducting essential activities like grocery shopping.

I encourage you to help out our community through purchasing takeaway from your local restaurants, cafes and similar businesses during this time. Continue the support of our local businesses once restrictions ease and help our community bounce back.

As a community, we know that working together will ensure that potential future lockdowns and stay at home orders can be prevented. More importantly, by doing the right thing and taking conscious steps toward reducing transmissions will ensure we all stay safe together.

We are in this together.
