Mayoral Column – Georges River is making a commitment to building a child-safe community

This week is dedicated to National Child Protection Week, and Bravehearts’ White Balloon Day will be held on Friday 10 September 2021.

Child Protection Week is a significant week for all of us in Georges River as we play our part in giving every child in our community a safe place to grow and thrive.

I am proud to lead Georges River Council in our commitment as a child-safe organisation and I’m pleased to see our new Child Protection Action Plan in place this week.

This Plan will guide all Council staff and representatives to understand the role they play, both individually and collectively, in ensuring the safety and protection of our youngest citizens.
We are proactive in ensuring there are opportunities for young people to demonstrate selfagency and have their voices heard on issues that directly impact their lives.

The Georges River Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) has been formed, by children as young as 12 years of age, to work closely with Council to improve young people’s access to services and to address their needs and aspirations.

We have been participating in a consultation with the Office of the Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP) in efforts to ensure that young people are represented in the response to the COVID-19 recovery.

There are six early childhood centres owned and operated by Council, caring for approximately 440 children and families.

Our children in the centres are consulted on matters that affect them. Examples of this can be seen in developing recruitment interview questions for future employees, having their voice represented in the service’s philosophies as well as having their say in what nutritious foods will go on the upcoming seasonal menu.

As an inclusive and balanced community, it is necessary to remind ourselves of the value in including young people's views across all areas of our daily lives, business operations, programs, events and service provision.
