Magic of Christmas event certified as carbon neutral

Georges River Council’s much-loved Magic of Christmas event has been certified a carbon neutral event by Climate Active. Council has implemented a number of strategies to reduce and offset carbon emissions at the event, which is taking place this Sunday 1 December 2019, at Carss Bush Park.
The certification means that all activities associated with running the event have resulted in net zero emissions. This includes electricity used for stage light and sound, transport, diesel used in generators, food and catering, food waste and fireworks.
Council has offset emissions for the event by purchasing carbon credits that support tree protection. This prevents the release of carbon stored in these trees, which would otherwise occur as a result of the logging, processing and use of timber. The project also helps to protect and restore valuable native forests, which provide a habitat for a number of species.
The Magic of Christmas event will also feature a number of emissions reduction measures. These include: renewable energy (solar panels), promoting sustainable transport, banning single-use plastic bags, balloons and straws, and providing a water refill station to decrease the amount of single-use plastic bottles at the event.
Climate Active, an Australian Government-backed program, is the most rigorous and credible carbon neutral certification available in Australia enabling individuals, businesses and government to work together to protect our environment now and for the future.
