Lunar New Year Festival returns to Hurstville bigger and better than ever before

29/01/2018

Georges River Council is pleased to announce its premier Lunar New Year Festival is set to return to Forest Road, Hurstville, on Saturday 10 February with a bigger program than seen in previous years.

Mayor of Georges River Council, Kevin Greene, said this year’s Lunar New Year Festival, which is proudly supported by platinum sponsor Westpac, will feature several highlights that will bring the Hurstville CBD alive.

“Council will be welcoming in the Year of the Dog with several spectacular live performances, and 70 market stalls throughout Forest Road.”

“For the first time, starting at 10.00am, the festival will also see a vibrant float parade through Forest Road which will add to the bright and colourful atmosphere of the day.”

“The Festival area has also been expanded to allow for more amusement rides, kids’ activities and spectacles the whole family can enjoy.”

“I am also very pleased to announce the headline act for our Lunar New Year Festival is popular Australian-Chinese pop singers Leslie Lee and Jacquely Wang,” Mayor Greene added.

“Leslie is a popular singer and member of Chinese group The Dreamers. The group performs regularly in Western Australia and has recently performed at the State Theatre of Western Australia,” he said.

“Jacquely is a winner of the 2012 TVB International New Talent Singing Competition for the Sydney Region. She performs regularly at Sydney’s Town Hall and also is the leading singer for the Chinese National Anthem for the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China.”

Mayor Greene said Council’s Lunar New Year Festival is a celebration of the Georges River area’s diversity and is a fantastic way of showcasing the unique cultures that make the local area one of the best places to live, work and play.

“This event is now in its fifteenth year and continues to be a local favourite for many people within the local area, but to visitors as well,” he said.

“In fact, this event has grown year on year and attracts tens of thousands of people, which shows how much people love this local tradition.”

“I would like to thank Westpac for supporting this great local event, and the other sponsors who have made this event even bigger and better than in previous years.”

“I would also like to thank Council’s Major Events Advisory Committee for their efforts in helping plan for our Lunar New Year Festival. The work they have put into this event has ensured this year will be the biggest and best Lunar New Year Festival to date.”
