Libraries provide continued support over Christmas and New Year period

Georges River Council will provide library services over the Christmas and New Year period at Hurstville Library and Clive James Library, Kogarah from Thursday 24 December 2020 to Sunday 10 January 2021.

Customers will have access to self-service kiosks, public access computers, printing, photocopying and scanning, browsing and borrowing and designated study/working spaces during this period.

Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene said that over the last few months, the Library Service has engaged and supported the community with a range of activities including livestreamed storytime and rhyme time sessions.

“There have been wonderful sessions streamed via the library Facebook page to continue fostering the early learning development of young children,” said Mayor Greene.

“Our libraries have also hosted a number of online events to support the mental health and creativity of our local community.

“People can once again access the Library of Things collections, one of our most popular available for loan, which consists of a range of toys, games, musical instruments and science kits.

“We have also seen the opening of the newly refurbished mezzanine at Hurstville Library, which has been transformed into a multipurpose space equipped with new AV equipment, seating and a selection of games for young people.

“Another incredibly exciting recent addition is the new Media Lab space at Hurstville Library which offers a range of state-of-the-art digital technology, available both for in-house use and for loan.

“Facilities in the Media Lab include a full photographic studio featuring a cyclorama wall, green screen and lighting, a sound booth/music practice room, a 3D-printer and much more to support creative projects and digital media production,” added Mayor Greene.

Penshurst Library will be open on 24 December 2020 from 10.00am to 5.00pm and will be closed over the Christmas and New Year period (Thursday 24 December 2020 to Sunday 10 January 2021).

Oatley and South Hurstville libraries continue to remain closed as they do not comply with the NSW Public Health Order and COVID-19 Safety Plan for Libraries, particularly the requirement to ensure physical distancing at the single entrance/egress point of these branch libraries. However, the community is now able to return borrowed items 24/7 via the returns chutes at both branches.

Council is committed to keeping the community and staff safe and will reopen these facilities as soon as the physical distancing requirements, as stated by the NSW Public Health Order and COVID-19 Safety Plan for Libraries, are no longer required.
