Georges River Council proudly presents the 2016 Kogarah Art Prize. Now in its fifth year, the Kogarah Art Prize is an annual acquisitive prize for painting in any medium, with prizes totalling $14,000.

At 7.00pm on Friday 10 June, Gail Connolly, Interim General Manager of Georges River Council, will open the Kogarah Art Prize Finalists’ Exhibition at Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre.

She will be joined by special guest and Kogarah Art Prize judge, Dr Gene Sherman AM, Chair and Executive Director of Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF), who will announce the winners of the Kogarah Art Prize. Dr Sherman brings her expertise as a gallerist, curator, academic and philanthropist who has made a significant contribution to the Australian cultural landscape.

Dr Sherman said that she was delighted by the calibre of entries to the Kogarah Prize.

"Amongst the several hundred applicants I found a number of fully resolved works which were focused images with strong visual impact, compositional awareness and competence, accomplished technique and above all an original perspective on the subject matter.

"Bravo to those whose work has been selected as well as to those who worked hard at their entries," she said.

Ms Connolly said that it has been an honour to have such a distinguished judge for this popular and accomplished annual prize and Finalists’ Exhibition.

"I’d like to invite the community to attend this much-anticipated local cultural event which always inspires discussion on new directions in current art practice, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to open the evening," she said.

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite painting for the People’s Choice Prize, supported by Visual Art at Arncliffe. The People’s Choice Prize will be announced on Monday 27 June, and the exhibition will run until Sunday 3 July 2016.
