Have your say on Council’s new draft Venue Hire Grant Funding Program

23/12/2016

Georges River Council has created a new draft Venue Hire Grant Funding Program to help local not-for-profit organisations access Council-owned venues and facilities in 2017.

All members of the community are invited to provide their feedback on the new program, which is designed to allow local not-for-profit organisations to apply for a subsidiary towards the cost of hiring one of Council’s venues.

Administrator of Georges River Council, John Rayner, said in the past the former Hurstville City and Kogarah City Councils subsidised venue hire at an estimated cost of $2 million each year.

“As part of Georges River Council’s harmonisation of policies and consistent with our new approach of greater transparency, equity and consultation, we are introducing simple and consistent criteria for the community to address, which will ensure fair access to our facilities,” he said.

“Our new policy overcomes historical allocation issues, is flexible enough to accommodate new and emerging groups, and allocates also the greatest subsidies to those groups that provide the greatest benefits to the community.”

“Subsidies will be made available to community groups looking to run activities that involve community development, culture and arts, environment and conservation or sport and recreation.”

“Council plans to offer two rounds of grant applications per year and organisations can apply for up to $30,000 per annum.”

Mr Rayner added said the proposed funding program is an example of Council’s commitment to support locally-driven projects which meet identified local needs.

“The funding will support Council’s successful Community Grants Program and enable organisations to continue to deliver popular services and activities throughout the local area,” he said.

“This year we had significant interest from 66 organisations applying for $200,000 in funding. Of these groups, 38 were successful and I am happy to be able to increase our allocation next year.”

“I encourage all members of the local area to provide their feedback on the new program.”

Georges River Council is now seeking feedback on the draft policy which is available to view on the Council website: www.georgesriver.nsw.gov.au
