Have your say on Council’s draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan

11/04/2017

Georges River Council Administrator John Rayner is inviting all members of the community to provide their feedback on Council’s draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

Mr Rayner said the draft Plan will be on public exhibition from Tuesday 4 April until Monday 1 May 2017 to give all members of the Georges River area an opportunity to share their thoughts.

“On completion, the Plan will outline how Council will work towards being a more inclusive organisation for members of the community and within the workplace, especially those with disability,” he said.

“The plan will also set out the strategies and actions Council will deliver in the next four years until 2021 to enable people with a disability to have greater access to services, facilities and events.

Council will consider allocating funds in the 2017/18 Budget to assist in the construction of physical works to improve access.

“I encourage all members of the local area to participate and have their say on the Plan, which will be available to view at Council Service Centre on the corner of MacMahon and Dora Streets, Hurstville, and local libraries. The Plan will also be available online in a variety of accessible formats.”

Mr Rayner explained that Council had engaged in extensive community consultation between October 2016 and February 2017 to help develop the Plan.

“Consultation was held at Council’s libraries and in partnership with local disability service providers, and at large events such as Australia Day and International Day of People with Disability,” he said.

“Members of the community along with Georges River Council staff members were also able to provide feedback through online surveys,” he added.

To support the implementation of the Plan, Council will be establishing an Access Reference Group.

This group will consist of community members with disability, carers and representatives from access organisations, working closely with Council staff to provide up-to-date information on accessibility issues and priorities within the local community.
