Georgie the Dragon, Georges River Council’s colourful mascot, took home a highly commended award at the 2018 NSW Local Government Excellence Awards.

These awards recognise and showcase excellence in the local government sector in NSW and significant achievements by NSW councils over the past year, with Council receiving a highly commended accolade in the Special Project Initiative category.

This category recognises leadership where an individual, team or council has developed a concept or practice that significantly improves the business, development of processes or practices that has had a major impact on the organisation or its customers.

General Manager of Georges River Council, Gail Connolly, said that the mascot’s design was inspired by Council’s distinctive logo that features a striking red dragon.

“Our logo is the result of extensive community consultation which found that the dragon motif struck a chord with residents. Both the logo and Georgie the Dragon were developed by in-house experts, representing considerable savings to ratepayers.”

“Funded by NSW Government merger funds, the new mascot was introduced to the Georges River community in Spring 2017, and has since appeared at numerous Council and community events, including Australia Day and Lunar New Year Festivals, One Billion Rising and several school fetes,” she added.

Georgie has proved extremely popular, particularly with young children. If there is a community-focused event that you would be interested in having Georgie attend please send an email to check availability via mail@georgesriver.nsw.gov.au or phone 9330 6400.
