Georges River area set to get greener with 1,000 new trees

The canopy coverage in the local area is set to receive a significant boost after Georges River Council was successful in securing funding from two separate grant streams under the NSW Government’s Greening Our City grant program, totalling $623,000.

Funding from the Cooler Suburbs stream totalling $494,000 will go towards planting 1,000 new trees in streets and parks and distributing trees to schools in a Carlton Canopy Corridor, stretching from Narwee to Kogarah Bay.

A further $129,000 in funding from the Green Innovations stream will go towards planting trees in urbanised areas in Georges River which will measure the benefits associated with increasing canopy cover in urban areas including improved health of residents.

The success of this project will be measured through tree health, impact on surrounding services and infrastructure and a reduction in the urban heat island effect.

This project is part of the Greening Our City grant program that is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Local Government NSW.
