Georges River Council residents invited to celebrate 2016 National Tree Day

12/07/2016

Georges River Council Administrator John Rayner is encouraging local residents to celebrate National Tree Day on Sunday 31 July, 2016 by joining Council in native tree-planting events and native tree giveaways.
“National Tree Day is one of Australia’s biggest nature care initiatives, and each year more than 200,000 people across the country participate,” Mr Rayner said.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to do something positive for both the Georges River community and our local environment.
“Starting in 1996, this initiative has seen 22.3 million trees planted across the country which have made a significant contribution to the landscape and the environment.

“National Tree Day helps address important environmental issues like the loss of habitat for native wildlife, soil salinity, erosion and contributes to individual and community health.”
Mr Rayner said that every year local residents and volunteers have shown strong commitment to helping plant trees.
“This year I encourage more community members to get involved and invest in our future environment on National Tree Day. It is a great event for everyone to participate in, especially families,” he said.
“The Georges River region has a large number of green spaces and parklands, and with initiatives like this and the commitment of volunteers, we can continue to grow these spaces for the benefit of the community.
“In addition to the tree planting events, Council will be giving away two native trees per resident.
“To receive the free native trees, local residents simply need to present a recent rates notice on the day.”
