Georges River Council invites you to celebrate NAIDOC Week, 3-10 July 2016

20/06/2016

Georges River Council Administrator John Rayner is encouraging all residents of the local area to take part in a number of activities hosted by Council to celebrate NAIDOC Week in 2016.

Mr Rayner said NAIDOC Week is a chance for everyone to honour and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia.

“NAIDOC Week is a fantastic opportunity to recognise the contributions and accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” he said.

“I encourage everyone to come along and help us celebrate this important week."

“We have a series of great events taking place this week which is a great opportunity for everyone to learn and appreciate the rich and diverse Aboriginal cultures that exist within the local area.”

Council will be hosting a number of activities on Tuesday 5 July at the Civic Theatre of the Hurstville Entertainment Centre to commemorate NAIDOC Week.

Activities will include arts and crafts for children, a flag raising ceremony, traditional Aboriginal didgeridoo and dance performances and the launch of the book I am Aboriginal: this is my story…

On Monday 18 July, Council is also hosting a craft and story sharing event called ‘Yarning Together’ with a local community elder at Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre.
