Georges River Council approves annual major events schedule

Georges River Council Administrator John Rayner has approved Council’s annual major events schedule for 2016/2017.

“Council’s major events schedule provides a great opportunity for the community to come together in celebration and I am pleased with the scope of events that will held in the coming months,” he said.

“The recent Council merger has presented an opportune time to bring events of both the former Hurstville and Kogarah City Councils into one single events calendar without detracting from the quality of the festivals planned.

“This year’s schedule will see a wonderful Australia Day event to be held at Carss Bush Park, which will incorporate a Citizenship Ceremony, local community entertainment from the Georges River area, food stalls, professional entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display.

“Georges River community members will have an opportunity to be involved with, stallholder applications and expressions of interest for performances to be announced shortly.

“This event will provide an opportunity for people to celebrate Australia Day locally in one of Council’s most picturesque parks.”

Mr Rayner said that Council will also celebrate the 2017 Lunar New Year with a vibrant festival to be held in the Hurstville CBD, with a satellite event involving community entertainment to be held in the Kogarah Town Square.

“In addition, there will be an extensive program of activities for all ages held across Council’s libraries to celebrate this important cultural festival,” he said.

“Council will continue to host regular Citizenship Ceremonies, which will be held at Hurstville Civic Centre on a bi-monthly basis, each of which will welcome more than 70 new citizens to our thriving community.

“Council is committed to providing community events that promote community participation and cohesion from all members of the Georges River region.”
