Diwali Festival to light up Hurstville Plaza

24/10/2019

The triumph of light over darkness and of understanding over ignorance will be celebrated at the Diwali Festival of Light at Hurstville Plaza on Saturday 2 November 2019.

Mayor of Georges River Council Kevin Greene said that the key celebration of South East Asian culture will officially conclude George River Council’s five-week Discovery Festival, which showcases local art and culture.

“The Diwali Festival celebration will allow our community to come together to take part in traditional customs led by the Georges River’s vibrant Indian and Nepalese community,” said Mayor Greene.

“The evening will feature South East Asian music, dance, food, Rangoli art and delicious Indian and Nepalese vegetarian food, and community members will be invited to join the lighting of the lamps at sunset.

“The Nepalese community is the Georges River area’s fastest-growing demographic and I am proud we are able to facilitate this opportunity for people from South-East Asian backgrounds to share their stories and traditions with the wider Georges River community,” added Mayor Greene.

Community groups including the South Asian Australian Association, Resourceful Australian Indian Network, Advance Diversity Services, Janaranjani Radio and the South Sydney Indian Association will lead the festivities at the event, as well as 2NBC.

Attendees can look forward to a traditional ‘Dhol’ drum performance, Mehendi (Henna), Diwali lights, Bollywood and traditional Indian and Nepalese dancers and food stalls, sorbets and ice creams.

Discovery Festival 2019 has delivered a range of creative and cultural events to the local area, ranging from international film, art, food and writing. The annual festival aims to acknowledge the people from all walks of life who make the Georges River community unique and to provide fun, interactive and accessible ways for people to experience other cultures and creative projects in the local area.
