Council recognised for excellence in environmental sustainability achievements

Georges River Council has been shortlisted in the Local Government NSW’s Excellence in Environment Awards, in the Towards Net Zero Emissions category, for its actions and commitment to achieve 100% renewable energy in its operations by 2025 and the implementation of mitigation initiatives to progress towards net zero carbon emissions.

Mayor of Georges River Council Kevin Greene commended Council’s Environmental Sustainability Team for their commitment to achieving significant environmental outcomes for the community.

“I am delighted to be sharing another proud moment regarding Council’s achievements in the environmental sustainability sector, with recognition in the Local Government NSW’s Excellence in Environment Awards, which celebrate outstanding work by councils,” said Mayor Greene.

“We recently announced that Georges River Council was one of the first councils to achieve all pledges out of 128 councils in the Cities Power Partnership, and Council has now been officially recognised for these initiatives and others projects that have contributed to reducing Council’s operational emissions.

“I would like to congratulate and thank Council’s dedicated Environmental Sustainability Team for continuously striving for excellence, to improve the resilience and sustainability of the Georges River community now and into the future,” added Mayor Greene.

Council has implemented a number of renewable energy initiatives within its operations during the past year by increasing the load of renewable energy in its electricity contract to 20%, increasing the use of solar panels in Council facilities and the promotion of renewable power options in households within the community.

Two electric vehicles have been purchased for Council’s fleet, and Council has commenced an accelerated conversion program of LED street lights with Ausgrid. A Revolving Energy Fund has been developed to encourage and support ongoing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects and over the last year, Council certified its summer events as Carbon Neutral.

The Local Government NSW’s Excellence in Environment Awards feature 38 finalists across 16 award categories, and will be held via a virtual event on Tuesday 13 October 2020. Writer and comedian Craig Reucassel will host the event, best known for his work with The Chaser and ABC’s The War on Waste and Fight for Planet A.
