Council looks to build local jobs to further support our local economy

Georges River Council is working towards building a strong economy for the long term, with the development of Part 1 of the two-phase Draft Commercial Centres Strategy.
The strategy is outlined in Georges River Council’s Delivery Program 2018/19 to 2020/21 and Operational Plan 2019/20, which was adopted by Council on June 24 2019 after a period of extensive community consultation.
Mayor of Georges River Council Kevin Greene said that the creation of the document was an important step in achieving Economic Development goals outlined in the Delivery Program and Operational Plan.
“Part 1 of Council’s Commercial Centres Strategy is on Public Exhibition until 7 August 2019 and offers a centre analysis so that we can better plan to create future economic growth and more local job opportunities,” said Mayor Greene.
“The Strategy is a supporting document for Council’s Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 and identifies local economic trends and drivers, and presents an audit and hierarchy of all centres. It will inform the new Georges River Local Environmental Plan, which is currently being prepared.
“Understanding and strengthening the area’s commercial centres is a critical component of future planning, and the creation of the Strategy takes us closer to realising goals set out in Council’s Delivery Program and Operational Plan.
“I strongly encourage local residents to review the Strategy and share feedback before the closing date, to ensure the existing economic condition of each centre is captured in detail.”
Council is preparing Part 2 of the Commercial Centres Strategy, which will inform future changes to the Georges River area’s planning framework. This phase will consider the roles and functions of all commercial centres in the area and will provide centre-specific objectives, built form controls/guidelines and investigate the potential expansion of appropriate centres to ensure the community’s needs are captured.
