Council installs Places to ChillOUT

Georges River Council has kicked off installation of three world-first ChillOut hubs across the local area, specially designed to provide ‘cool spots’ - public spaces that are shaded, accessible, equitable and social.
Mayor of Georges River Council Kevin Greene said that the ChillOut Spaces, which are located in Mortdale Town Centre, Timothy Reserve Hurstville and Belgrave Street Kogarah, have been created utilising community feedback.
“The ChillOut spaces have been uniquely designed to suit their locations and the needs of their communities,” explained Mayor Greene.
“Kogarah will be an oasis for residents to rest, dine and work outdoors. Mortdale is a place for locals to meet, connect and take a break and Hurstville, with its park location, enhances an already joyful place for parents and their children to meet and play.
“Council aims to improve the lifestyle in the Georges River area by providing these smart, flexible spaces for outdoor work and play,” added Mayor Greene.
The ChillOut hubs are constructed with smart furniture, solar power, charging points and environmental sensors, to increase community connectivity and enable knowledge exchange. This technology will also help Council plan better ways to deliver public spaces in an increasingly hot climate.
Council was recently awarded Highly Commended for cross sectoral collaboration at the Committee for Sydney Smart City Awards 2019. The accolade acknowledged Council’s collaboration with University of New South Wales and Street Furniture Australia on the ChillOut hubs project.

The unique collaboration involves a team of industrial designers, landscape architects, urban planners, marketing experts, engineers, and local government professionals. $380,000 in funding was secured for the project through the Australian Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Program.
Installation of the ChillOut Hubs is scheduled for completion in November 2019, and the community will have an opportunity to provide feedback on these hubs via Council’s Your Say Georges River portal and surveys on-site.
