Council endorses the establishment of the Georges River Chamber of Commerce

05/07/2016

At the regular Council meeting last night (4 July 2016), Georges River Administrator John Rayner endorsed the establishment a new Chamber of Commerce to represent businesses across the Georges River area.

Mr Rayner said the decision to create a new Chamber of Commerce for the Georges River area will help to support local businesses for the long-term.

“Council is supportive of the creation of this Chamber and it will have a great number of benefits not just for local businesses and the economy, but the community as well,” he said.

“The creation of a strong Chamber will lead to further economic growth and help to foster a healthy and thriving business sector that provides the community with potential employment opportunities locally.

Mr Rayner said Council will offer both financial and developmental support to the establishment and operation of the new Chamber, starting with a $30,000 contribution per year for five years.

“In order to support the development of a regionally-based Chamber of Commerce, Council will provide funding and support through access to Council’s economic development programs, communications, networks and venues,” he said.

“It is envisaged that the Chamber will be a voice for local businesses, and will be focused on identifying the current issues they face and their future needs.

“There are currently four Chambers of Commerce operating across the local government area – Hurstville, Kogarah, Lugarno and Mortdale. The establishment of a Georges River Chamber of Commerce will support and increase the capacity of these existing bodies.”

Following this endorsement, Georges River Council will begin assisting the establishment of the new Chamber of Commerce, and work towards developing a Memorandum of Understanding that will outline the key expectations of the new entity and commitments from Council.

The new Georges River Chamber of Commerce will also work closely with the Economic Development Advisory Committee, which will also be established following an endorsement from Council at last night’s meeting.
