Council adds Georges River COVID-19 Hero Award to Australia Day Award categories

Georges River Council is calling on the community to get their nominations in for its 2021 Australia Day Awards, which recognise and honour individuals who have contributed significantly to the Georges River community.

Mayor of Georges River Council Kevin Greene said that the awards are an opportunity to celebrate stand-out community members after a particularly challenging year.

“Nominations for Council’s Australia Day Awards 2021 have just opened and after a challenging year which has brought us drought, bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever to recognise the good that people are doing in our community.

“That is why Council has added the new Georges River COVID-19 Hero Award - to celebrate individuals in the local area who have significantly supported vulnerable members of the Georges River community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This year local residents have demonstrated exceptional resilience, an incredible community spirit, and we have seen some wonderful acts of goodness throughout the community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I look forward to being able to officially recognise the people who have brought kindness to the community, as well as residents who have contributed significantly in other award categories.

“If you know someone who you are proud of, who is making real change for their community, I encourage you to nominate them today,” added Mayor Greene.

Award Categories also include Young Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Green Advocate of the Year, and an Arts and Culture Award. An overall Citizen of the Year will be selected from these categories, and winners will be recognised at a COVID-19 Safe Australia Day event in January next year.

Australia Day Award nominees must be an Australian Citizen and live in the Georges River Local Government Area. Submissions close 1 November 2020. For more information or to nominate please visit
