Council’s English language directory gives new migrants a helping hand

Georges River Council officially launched its St George and Sutherland Shire 2018 English Classes Directory on 20 February 2018.
The directory contains comprehensive information about English classes available in the St George and Sutherland areas offered by churches, community centres, libraries and other providers.
Mayor of Georges River Council, Kevin Greene, said the directory is a great resource for new migrants who wish to improve their English language skills and gain confidence with reading and speaking.
“The directory assists residents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” Mayor Greene said.
“By improving their English they will then be able to access mainstream services, gain employment and fully participate in the local community.”
“Council is proud to collaborate with various local community organisations to produce this guide.”
“I’d also like to acknowledge St George Sutherland Shire Employment Training English Action Network for their contribution towards the completion of the directory,” he added.
Mayor Greene added that this is just one way Council is working to deliver benefits for members of the local community.
“Council delivers many services that help and support the newest members of the local community,” he said.
“By helping new arrivals in the Georges River area, we are able to foster an inclusive and connected community where everyone feels welcome.”
The directory is available online or in hardcopy from Georges River Civic Centre and Georges River Libraries.
