Construction of new youth centre begins as part of the Penshurst Park Sports Hub Project

22/07/2020

Stage 2 of Georges River Council’s new Penshurst Park Sports Hub Project is well underway with the first major pour of the site taking place this morning for the construction of the sports hub’s youth centre.

Upon completion, the youth centre will consist of a training kitchen, half-court basketball facility and versatile multi-use spaces for meetings and events.

Mayor of Georges River Kevin Greene said the youth centre would be a much-used asset for local youth groups and services upon completion in March 2021 along with the other transformational works occurring on the site.

“I’m very excited to see Council’s vision for Penshurst Park taking shape, which will not only see this site become a regional sporting hub for use by a wide variety of sporting groups, but also a multi-use facility for the whole community to make use of and enjoy,” said Mayor Greene.

“The youth centre is part of the Stage 2 of the project, which will also see the construction of a 275-seat grandstand, outdoor exercise station, accessible amenities and change rooms, car park upgrade and a synthetic sports field with hydraulic cricket wicket.

“This will be a park that meets the needs of the whole community. There will be something here for everyone, including the recently completed Penshurst Park Inclusive Adventure Playground which opened in June with picnic and barbecue facilities, shelters, seating and new inclusive play equipment to accommodate all ages and abilities,” he said.

Stage 2 of the project follows the delivery in 2019 of the Norm O’Neill Cricket Training Facility which represented Stage 1 of the project, as identified in the Penshurst Park Plan of Management and detailed Masterplan for the site.

The Commonwealth Government provided a $1,000,000 Community Development Grant to support and assist Council in the construction and delivery of the synthetic football field as part of the project. The remaining funding for the project is allocated from Developer Contributions, Voluntary Planning Agreement and Council funds.
