Community to help design recycling and waste management services

Georges River Council’s draft Waste Strategy will be on public exhibition from Friday 7 August, with community engagement opportunities planned to help Council design one of its largest contracts – its waste collection service.

Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene said that as an essential council service, waste collection in the local area is something residents and businesses are highly invested in.

“The consultation program will gauge the community’s preferences for processing and disposal options as proposed within the draft Waste Strategy,” said Mayor Greene.

“We want to deliver a reliable, environmentally and economically sustainable waste management system that improves local amenity.

“I have no doubt that our engagement will capture some fantastic community-led ideas which can assist Council in optimising waste management costs and delivering contracts that are adaptive to our community’s changing needs.

“Additionally, we hope to develop a service that responds directly to our community’s attitudes to various processing and disposal options. We will also be able to determine how often they want certain waste streams collected, including additional services such as e-waste recycling and household chemical collections.

“Council is acutely aware of the need to get this right, with responsible and sustainable waste management becoming a priority issue around the globe.

“The draft Waste Strategy identifies 16 key actions to address strategic resource recovery and waste management objectives including better addressing food and garden organic waste, as well as education to reduce recycling contamination.

Community engagement for the draft Waste Strategy and waste collection services is planned to commence in August and run until the end of September, and feedback will also be made possible via Council’s Your Say platform.

Results of the community consultation and engagement program will inform the future development of the next waste services collection contract.
