Community asked to dig in on National Tree Day

Following the success of previous National Tree Day celebrations, Georges River Council is once again asking local community members to support this year’s celebrations on Sunday, 28 July 2019.

National Tree Day is one of Australia’s biggest nature care initiatives with more than 200,000 people participating across the country every year. It helps address important environmental issues like the loss of habitat for native wildlife, soil salinity, erosion and contributes to individual and community health.

As part of this year’s celebrations, Georges River Council is hosting multiple initiatives to encourage the community to improve the environment, whether at home or in open spaces.

Free native plants will be provided to residents to enhance their gardens (subject to availability) at a tree giveaway event in Olds Park, Penshurst.

Additionally, there will be a tree planting event at Beverly Hills Park, where trees, shrubs and ground cover will be planted for the benefit of the entire community.

Participating local schools and Council childcare centres are also being provided with small native plants and advice as part of the accompanying School’s Tree Day.

Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene acknowledged the importance of the community getting behind this day.

“We are keen for more residents and community groups to come together this National Tree Day to participate in an event that adds enormous value to our green spaces,” said Mayor Greene.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for residents to do something positive for the local environment, and will help us move toward our target of achieving 40% tree canopy for the Georges River area by 2038,” he added.
