Celebrating 110 years of 1st Hurstville Scout Group

Georges River Council is pleased to celebrate 110 years of the 1st Hurstville Scout Group with a special exhibition, The Adventure Begins, at Hurstville Museum & Gallery from 29 September – 21 October 2018.
The 1st Hurstville Scout Group was founded in 1908, the same year that the Scout Movement in Australia was established, making it one of the oldest groups in the country.

Today the Group has over 100 members, including the Dwyer family who have been members for over 20 years. Helen Dwyer, the Leader in Charge and her husband John, the Rover Crew adviser are passionate about the 1st Hurstville Scout Group. Their son, James, joined Scouts as a Joey when he was just six. Now at 29 he is the Scout Leader, he even met his wife Liz through Scouts. Together, the Dwyer family has provided over 65 years of voluntary services to Scouting.

This exhibition consists of memorabilia, including scouting badges and photos that explore the 1st Hurstville Scout Group’s strong local history, its service to our community and its relevance to the youth of today.

Scouting has long been recognised for its youth development and confidence-building through fun activities and challenges including outdoor adventures.

The exhibition will include intriguing displays of scouting heritage items with hands-on activities to be enjoyed by young and old plus images of how the Scouts continue to contribute to our community today.

Whether to relive memories or discover what scouting is about today, come and explore The Adventure Begins exhibition at Hurstville Museum & Gallery.
