Australian sporting icon named as Council’s Australia Day Ambassador

Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene is pleased to announce Australian swimming legend Susie Maroney OAM will be Council’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2018.

Mayor Greene said Ms Maroney will take part in the official proceedings of Council’s popular Australia Day Festival at Carss Bush Park on Friday 26 January, which will include an Australian Citizenship Ceremony.

“Ms Maroney is a great Australian sporting legend who has trained within the local area with Dick Caine at Carss Park,” he said.

“Throughout her sporting career, Ms Maroney has set numerous world records, including one as the youngest and fastest Australian to swim the English Channel. She has even completed the longest recorded swim from Mexico to Cuba, which is over 200 kilometres, in 37 hours and 43 minutes.”

“Outside of swimming, Ms Maroney has been very active in supporting various causes including roles as Ambassador for the Leukaemia Foundation since 1997, Ambassador for the Asthma Foundation since 1989 and Patron for the Starlight Foundation,” he said.

Mayor Greene added that following the official proceedings and Citizenship Ceremony, Council’s Australia Day Festival will commence.

“Council’s Australia Day Festival has been widely regarded as one of the best local Australia Day events and has been a tradition for many local families and visitors to the Georges River area.”

“Proudly supported by Silver Sponsor Aussie, and Fireworks Sponsor The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader, the event will feature something for the whole family,” he said.

“Headlined by award-winning country music trio The McClymonts, the event will also feature a great line-up of performances, children’s activities, amusements rides and concluding with a spectacular fireworks display.”

“This is a great family event and I encourage everyone to come along,” Mayor Greene added.
