Amulet: People - Stories - Objects delves into the story behind precious possessions and heirlooms

Dragon’s Lair Gallery will soon host the Amulet: People - Stories - Objects exhibition, which will tell the stories of people and their special possessions including jewellery, souvenirs, gifts and heirlooms.
The exhibition features photographs and interviews with six individuals from Hurstville’s Fiestaville Multicultural Choir, and connects personal ‘amulets’ of the featured choir members to illustrate funny and often bittersweet stories.
The project is a collaboration between Sydney Morning Herald photographer Janie Barrett, Fiestaville Choir conductor Christina Mimmocchi and writer PP Cranney. Sofia Carvajal, an Australian-Chilean multimedia producer based in Hurstville, curated the exhibition. Sofia described the vision behind the exhibition, explaining her motivation to share the colourful stories of choir members with the wider community.
“The idea was to encapsulate our community stories and also reflect a piece of Hurstville’s living history,” said Sofia.
“It’s great to see members of the community online and offline, in exhibitions, showcasing stories, songs and experiences, encouraging more people to join the choir and perform in front of the wider community.”
The exhibition is a reminder of the ordinary yet extraordinary people who call Australia home, their experiences, loves, losses, strength, resilience and support for one another.
The Fiestaville Multicultural Choir celebrates the Georges River area’s multicultural community, to promote peace, harmony and understanding through the universal language of music.

The Dragon’s Lair Gallery is a community art space within Hurstville Museum & Gallery. Exhibitions are selected to reflect the diverse and artistically innovative community that exists in the Georges River area.
