Add a touch of festive colour to your neighbourhood by entering this year’s Christmas Lights Competition

Residents and businesses across the Georges River area are being encouraged to dress up their homes and shops with Christmas lights and decorations as part of Georges River Council’s annual Christmas Lights Competition.

Entries opened on Monday 11 November, with entrants able to self-nominate their own or nominate others homes or businesses via Council’s ‘Your Say’ portal at

Hard copy versions of the entry forms can also be printed from Your Say, and submitted at Council’s Customer Service Centres in Hurstville and Kogarah.

Mayor Greene said this year’s competition will again feature a People’s Choice award, following on from the positive reaction to this category last year.

“Voting for the People's Choice award will be open to the public from 9.00am Thursday 12 December, and close midnight Monday 16 December 2019,” said Mayor Greene.

“People can simply log in to Council’s ‘Your Say’ portal via the Council website and click on the Christmas Lights Competition icon, and cast their votes.

“This will be the third year the Christmas Lights competition has been run, and based on the high standard of displays we saw last year, we’re anticipating that many entrants will raise the bar even higher this year.

“Entries will be judged on their visual appeal, theme cohesion, amount of creativity, use and variety of decoration and lights, and sustainability of decorations used.

“It’s great to see the positive impact the Christmas lights have on people of all ages, creating a fantastic atmosphere and helping build a sense of the festive spirit that can draw neighbourhoods together to celebrate this very special time of the year.

“The best residential winner of each ward will receive a $500 gift voucher, and this could double to $1000 if they also take out the prize for Overall Best Residential display across the Georges River area.

“Best Business or Commercial winners will receive a $500 gift voucher, which is a great incentive to get shopfronts looking festive, so I encourage everyone to help spread some Christmas cheer by getting involved,” he added.

Entries can be submitted as self-nomination or nomination by other residents or businesses in the Georges River local government area.

Nominations close at midnight on Wednesday 11 December 2019. Entries need to comply with Georges River Council's Christmas Lights Competition Procedure. Late applications will not be accepted.
