Local Transport Forum Meetings

Georges River Council has established the Local Transport Forum (LTF). The Forum provides technical advice on local traffic and transport issues. It supports clear and informed decisions by bringing together Council and key agencies. These include those involved in traffic management, road safety, and public transport.

The Forum was previously known as the Local Traffic Committee. It operates under Transport for NSW delegations, which require councils to have a local forum to review certain traffic matters before they are put in place.

The Local Transport Forum provides advice on a wide range of matters. These include parking changes, traffic signs and line marking, intersection safety improvements, works zones, special event traffic arrangements and proposals that may affect public transport services.

The Forum provides non-binding advice to assist Council. Council remains responsible for decisions on Council-managed roads.

Some proposals must be referred to the Local Transport Forum for discussion before they can be implemented. This applies to proposals that restrict how a road is used for more than six months, or that change how vehicles turn between public roads. Referral is also required where a proposal would affect public transport for more than 24 hours. This includes actions that disrupt the safe or efficient operation of passenger services, block access to stations or bus stops, or remove or reduce bus priority measures.

Other proposals that do not require mandatory discussion will still be shared with the Forum under the new Council delegations and authorisations. These will be provided for record‑keeping or information only, where no approval is needed.

Forum Membership

The Local Transport Forum is run by Council. Formal members invited to attend include representatives from:

  • Council.

  • Transport for NSW.

  • NSW Police Force.

  • Local member or members of Parliament

  • Public transport operators who may be affected by a proposal.

Council may also invite advisers to attend for specific matters. Advisers may include road safety staff, emergency services, bus operators, taxi representatives and other technical experts.

Meeting Schedule

The Local Transport Forum usually meets at 10.00am every second month, except January. Meetings are held in the Dragon Room at the Georges River Civic Centre in Hurstville.

The scheduled Forum meetings for 2026 are:

  • Wednesday 29 April 2026.

  • Wednesday 24 June 2026.

  • Wednesday 26 August 2026.

  • Wednesday 28 October 2026.

  • Wednesday 2 December 2026.

Council may change the meeting frequency, time, or format if needed.

Members usually get agenda papers at least seven days before each meeting. Minutes are typically published within two weeks of the meeting. They capture the Forum's advice and recommendations.

The Process

Council officers investigate traffic and transport issues. If needed, they report these to the Local Transport Forum for a technical review.

  1. Council officers investigate the issue and prepare a report or proposal.

  2. The matter is placed on the Forum agenda for discussion.

  3. Forum members provide technical comments on safety, traffic operation, public transport, road network impacts and related matters.

  4. The Forum’s advice is recorded in the minutes which are reported to the Assets and Infrastructure Committee and Council.

  5. Council then considers that advice. Then, decides or moves the matter through the right approval process.
