Council welcomes outdoor dining

Aimed at encouraging increased outdoor dining, the changes to outdoor dining fees form part of Council’s Economic and Social Recovery Plan, and see a waiving and/or adjustment of fees and charges for all outdoor dining across the local government area.

The changes see a waiving of licence fees from 1 March, 2020 until 31 December, 2020 for all existing outdoor dining licence holders, and the introduction of a six month rent-free period for all new applications received for the remainder of 2020. Any new application for outdoor dining received from 1 January 2021 and for the 2021/2022 financial year, would receive a four-month rent free period.

The application fee would still be required to be paid and lodged (in advance) together with any required public liability insurances.

Mayor of Georges River Council Kevin Greene said the move was aimed at not only increasing the dining capacity of local restaurants and cafes but also about reinvigorating local centres in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions.

“We’re hopeful that by providing a rent free period, we will encourage a greater uptake of outdoor dining throughout the Georges River area,” said Mayor Greene

“Council have undertaken measures to connect with all applicable cafés and restaurants within the LGA to ensure they are aware of these opportunities along with the other initiatives Council is currently working on as part of its Economic and Social Recovery Plan for the local area.

“The social implications of the shutdown have made it all the more important for Council to focus on measures that encourage the community to rediscover their local eateries in a post COVID-19 world.

“Council is mindful that people may have concerns about eating out as life returns to normal. By providing concessions on outdoor dining, it is hoped it will give people greater choice in how they eat out and hopefully provide them with a greater sense of security with the option to eat outdoors,” said Mayor Greene.
