Community encouraged to reach out for Neighbour Day

21/03/2018

Georges River Council invites the community to get together to celebrate Neighbour Day at a free barbecue at Woodville Park, Hurstville, on Sunday 25 March.

Mayor of Georges River Council, Kevin Greene, said the event, which is being hosted in partnership with community housing provider, SGCH, will be a fun opportunity for members of the community to reach out to those who live close by, and especially neighbours they may not know already.

“Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration, which encourages people to connect with those who live nearby, and help make our communities friendly and safe all year round.”

“I encourage all members of the community to join their neighbours at Woodville Park. There will be a sausage-sizzle, entertainment and face-painting for the kids”.

Chief Executive of of SGCH, Scott Langford, added that the day encourages people to connect with those who live in their neighbourhood, build community spirit and prevent loneliness and isolation.

“It’s well known that connected communities, where people know each other, are often happier, safer, healthier and more resilient.”

Members of the community are also encouraged to host their own event or action in their local neighbourhood, using a Council Neighbour Day Resource Kit to help get them started.

Kits are free and available to pick up from Georges River Civic Centre, Georges River Libraries, and SGCH offices in Hurstville and Riverwood, and include postcard invitations, name tags and some get-together ideas.

“Your event or action can be as big or small as you like – from dropping a friendly message in your neighbour’s letterbox, to a ‘bring-a-plate’ gathering in your front yard, or a game of cricket in the local park,” suggested Mayor Greene.

“I hope to see you there, or to hear about the Neighbour Day activities taking place in your neighbourhood.”
