Mortdale Streetscape (“Smartdale”)


In December 2020 Council undertook community consultation to discuss the proposed Mortdale Town Centre Streetscape Upgrade Project. This project is focused on improving pedestrian safety and community amenity within the Mortdale Town Centre. Feedback obtained during the community consultation was included in the final streetscape design.

Stage 1 of the Mortdale Town Centre Streetscape Upgrade Project is progressing towards completion in August 2023. The extent of work within Stage 1 is identified in red on the attached plan. 

  • The under grounding of existing overhead electricity and telecommunication cables.
  • Installing multi-function streetlights.
  • Paving and stormwater upgrades.
  • Upgrading street furniture.
  • Upgrading existing raised pedestrian crossings.
  • Planting of street trees along Morts Road between Mortdale Train Station and Victoria Avenue.

The majority of the above works are now complete. Completion of the remaining works, which includes disconnection of existing overhead electrical infrastructure and energising of new underground electrical infrastructure, is predicated on scheduled outages booked by Ausgrid. All other remaining minor civil works will be completed following completion of Ausgrid works.
 
To ensure pedestrian and vehicular safety, and minimise disruptions to commuters, public transport and businesses within the Mortdale town centre, the remaining construction works for the Streetscape Upgrade project are completed out of hours (7:00pm to 5:00am: Monday to Friday civil works; Sunday to Thursday Ausgrid works).

A number of existing parking spaces within Mortdale were identified as non-compliant in accordance with Australian Standards and Transport for NSW guidelines. The legislative requirement to fix or remove non-compliant infrastructure or service provisions is a common occurrence during a capital works project. As a result, the non-compliant parking spaces have been removed to meet relevant standards, improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow. Council appreciates the inconvenience this may have caused to users of the town centre and will continue to investigate means of improving parking within the area.
