Kogarah Streets as Shared Spaces project

Works Start Date: October 2020
Works End Date: January 2021
Location: Kogarah Town Square
Funding: $50,000 from the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment's Streets as Shared Spaces grant program
Kogarah Town Square and surrounds has been transformed into a relaxing space for workers and patrons to linger and engage in the public realm. A pop-up park was installed in front of Clive James Kogarah Library Square from mid-October until January, creating an urban oasis in the heart of the town centre. The Kogarah Town Square is a key public space, particularly as a lunchtime gathering point.

In addition to the pop-up park, additional colourful street furniture has been installed along with creative LED strip lighting in the water feature. Fairy lights adorn the street trees along Belgrave St coupled with colourful lighting to light up two large trees outside the former Kogarah civic centre. At nearby Post Office Lane, a large mural was installed in December 2020 to increase pedestrian amenity where there is a high level of pedestrian activity. The mural is an acknowledgement of Bidjigal country and makes reference to Kogarah as ‘Place of Reeds’, as well as more broadly referencing the Georges River.

The project has activated the area into a better quality public space both during the day and into the night, injecting a lively energy into the area while allowing Council to experiment with more permanent public domain elements.
