Georges River Council is committed to building a community that practices road safety. From Sunday 17 May until Sunday 24 May, I encourage everyone to take part in National Road Safety Week and make the pledge to “Drive so Others Survive!”
National Road Safety Week is an initiative by the SARAH Group. It was launched by Peter Frazer OAM after the tragic loss of his daughter Sarah, in a road crash in 2012. The week raises awareness about the impact of road trauma and ways we can all help reduce it.
Every year, approximately 1200 people are killed and over 40,000 are left seriously injured on Australian roads.
Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24.
These numbers continue to grow every year but are preventable if we make safe choices. Slowing down, avoiding distractions and wearing seatbelts are just some of the small actions we can do to make a lifesaving difference.
At Council, we continue to invest in safer roads. As part of the Local Government Road Safety program, we will deploy several Speed Radar Variable Message Signs (VMS), and Speed Radar Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) Boards this month. The Council deploys these temporary Speed Radar VMS and VAS Boards to improve road safety for all users and to educate motorists about the posted speed limit.
This week is an important reminder for everyone on the road – pedestrians, drivers, and passengers – to stay alert and watch out for each other. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and every decision we make on the road has the power to protect lives.
Together, we can help make Georges River safer for everyone.
