Mayoral Column - Celebrating Pride and Community this Mardi Gras

27/02/2026

I am proud to acknowledge the 2026 Mardi Gras Festival as an important celebration for LGBTQIA+ community members across Georges River. Mardi Gras continues to remind us of the importance of respect, visibility and belonging for everyone in our community.

This year’s theme, ECSTATICA, reminds us that shared joy can unite people in powerful ways with community euphoria and collective energy. At Georges River Council, Mardi Gras is more than a vibrant celebration, it represents the ongoing push for social justice and inclusion for LGBTQIA+ individuals. This theme reminds us that personal pride and community connection can grow into a united movement for positive change.

Even as the festival draws to a close, our commitment to inclusion continues. Creating a safe and welcoming community is an ongoing responsibility, and one that strengthens Georges River all year round.

Council’s Social Justice Charter reflects this commitment by upholding the values of respect, connection and equity. The Charter recognises the LGBTQIA+ community as an identified vulnerable group, alongside CALD communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, young people, seniors and people with disabilities. This commitment guides us in creating programs and events that include, represent and celebrate the many identities within Georges River.

Throughout Mardi Gras, the winning Pride Bookmark Competition entries from our 2025 Pride Month celebrations have been available for free in our libraries for our community to take home. Designed by our community members, these bookmarks explored the theme of allyship, celebrating messages of acceptance and belonging.

As we move toward Pride Month this June, we celebrate the joy and diversity that enrich our community. Together, we can continue shaping a community where every person feels seen, valued and supported.
