Refugee Week
We are proud to be a Refugee Welcome Zone

Every year, we join local organisations, schools and community groups to mark Refugee Week to celebrate the triumphs of refugees and the contribution they have made to the local community. Annual activities include inspirational short stories and poems presented by school students to guest speakers highlighting the strengths and bravery of people rebuilding their lives in a safer environment than those from which they may have fled.

In 2019, Council will host a free event to celebrate the achievements of local people from refugee backgrounds. An inspirational guest speaker from a refugee background will share her experience of turning challenges into opportunities. An inter-generational cooking challenge, intended to successfully bridge the perceived gap between youth and seniors, will provide a platform for participants to share their stories and passions through cooking.

Date: Thursday 20 June 2019
Time: 3.00pm-8.00pm
Venue: Kogarah School of Arts, corner Queens Avenue and Bowns Road, Kogarah
