International Womens Day

International Women's Day is an important global celebration to acknowledge women and their economic, political and social empowerment. This annual event has been celebrated across the world since the early 1900s, which was a significant period for women’s rights.

Each year, Council celebrates this important day and acknowledges the many achievements of women and girls, highlighting their valuable contribution to society, regardless of divisions, be they ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious, economic or political.

In 2019 we brought local women together for a day of intellectual and heartfelt discussion on today’s climate for change and gender equality. Keynote speaker Georgia Durmush and inspirational panellists Dr Barbara Ferguson and Teresa Li discussed how we can support and champion women in leadership and “balance for better”.

This event was supported by the St George Women’s Interfaith Network and Georges River Council Youth Advisory Committee.
