  • Specific waste issues which require investigation

  • Illegal dumping

There are many household items that can contain hazardous or valuable materials which should not be disposed of in landfill. Technological advancements and legislation surrounding the product stewardship scheme now means a variety of recycling programs are available for residents to safely dispose of these items.

To help you dispose of an item, you can search by item type.

Asbestos Removal

Asbestos is a dangerous material which was commonly used until being banned throughout Australia in 2003. Due to the danger it can pose, there are strict safety protocols for the removal and disposal of asbestos.

To minimise the risk of asbestos exposure to yourself or your family, WorkCover recommends that householders engage a licensed asbestos removal contractor. Asbestos waste must be disposed of at a landfill facility that accepts it and may require 24 hours of notice before being dropped off.

Further information is outlined with Council's Asbestos Management Policies.

Container Deposit Scheme

Every year, more than 160 million drink containers end up as litter in NSW, hurting our environment and costing our community more than $162 million to clean up.  The Return and Earn container deposit scheme, which was rolled out state-wide on December 2017, encourages people to return eligible containers and receive a 10 cent refund at hundreds of collection points and reverse vending machines across NSW. Participants can choose to donate their refund to charity.

Residents wishing to continue to put eligible containers on the kerb side recycling will have their refund invested in improving waste services in your community.

More information including a map of locations within the Georges River Council area is available on the Return and Earn website.
