The Georges River Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP)

The Georges River Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) was finalised in July 2013 and has been adopted by GRCCC member Councils.

This plan was developed to conserve and improve the existing natural environment and improve water quality of the Georges River Estuary.

The Plan was certified by the NSW Environment Minister on 5 March, 2015 and gazetted on 10 July, 2015. The Plan is a statutory planning document that needs to be considered under Section 79C of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979.

It is a strategic document aimed at providing clear direction and guidance on future land use and environmental planning as well as on-the-ground management actions across the estuary and its broader catchment.

The Plan will allow Georges River Council to:

  • Protect important coastal habitats, features and heritage items

  • Rehabilitate degraded areas

  • Improve public access and amenity

  • Accommodate sustainable population growth and resource utilisation

  • Obtain funding to carry out works

  • Prioritise what needs to be done to better manage the estuary

  • Gain community support and acceptance on managing the estuary

  • Enhance cooperation between councils, agencies and stakeholders.
