In celebration of Harmony Day 2017, Georges River Libraries will host a number of free events from Monday 20 to Friday 24 March.
Harmony Day, held every year in March, is an annual event that encourages community participation and promotes respect for cultural and religious diversity.
Georges River Council Administrator John Rayner said Harmony Day is a great opportunity for residents to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Georges River area.
“We hope our celebrations will engage the community, particularly young people, and create a real sense of inclusiveness,” he said.
“The Georges River area is particularly diverse – 39.5% of the people who call this area home were born overseas.”
“This is reflected in our libraries’ extensive community language collection which includes books, DVDs and eResources in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Nepalese and Spanish.”
“It’s important to acknowledge the benefits and strength cultural diversity brings to our city, our nation and the Australian way of life,” he added.
Georges River Libraries’ celebrations are many and varied, and include a henna art workshop, a musical performance and craft workshops.
Libraries will also run a number of Harmony Day themed Story times
and Creative corner
