Access to Information

Georges River Council publishes a range of open access information in compliance with the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (GIPA Act).

What is the GIPA Act?

On July 1 2010, the GIPA Act commenced. This new legislation replaced the former Freedom of Information laws which had been operating since 1989.

The GIPA Act aims to:

  • meet community expectations for more open and transparent government information

  • encourage government agencies to proactively release government information

Council has an obligation under the GIPA Act to publish certain ‘open access’ information on its website, unless there is an overriding public interest against disclosure of the information or unless to do so would impose unreasonable additional costs to Council.
