Street parade to kick off Lunar New Year Festival

17/01/2019

Georges River Council’s popular Lunar New Year Festival will return on Saturday 2 February 2019, in a celebration of the Georges River area’s cultural diversity. The annual event will offer a colourful mix of entertainment, cultural activities and delicious food, to ring in the Year of the Pig.

Mayor of Georges River Council, Kevin Greene, said this year’s Lunar New Year Festival, which is proudly supported by Principal Sponsor Chemist Warehouse, will feature several impressive highlights.

“I am pleased to be bringing the Lunar New Year Festival to the Georges River area for the sixteenth year, a vibrant event that is a feast for the senses, and a place where visitors can immerse themselves in local culture and customs,” said Mayor Greene.

“Following the huge success of the event last year, which attracted 50,000 people, the festival will again kick off with a lively street parade featuring colourful floats along Forest Road in Hurstville, which will set the festive scene for the rest of the day.”

“The event will feature several spectacular live performances including headline act, singer, Wah Dee, who won the ‘Jacky Cheung look-a-like’ contest on Beijing TV, and whose repertoire ranges from songs by Jacky Cheung, to classic works of Cantopop singers like Leslie Cheung, Roman Tam and Paula Tsui.”

“Chinese fire crackers will add to the lively environment and visitors can marvel at a traditional Lion Dance, which is always a fantastic sight, as they eat their way through the various hawker stalls, sampling delicious food like dragon beard candy, Chinese dumplings and Malaysian noodles.”

“I would like to thank Council’s Major Events Advisory Committee for their efforts in helping plan for our Lunar New Year Festival, ensuring another quality event which is inclusive for all.”

Visitors can spend the day soaking up the festival atmosphere as they enjoy live entertainment, inflatable Zodiac animals, amusement rides, cultural performances, cooking demonstrations, an animal farm, 7D cinema, a free community piano, arts and crafts, a balloon artist, face painting, a visit from Kung Fu Panda, stilt walkers and much more.

The Major Events Advisory Committee Chair, Councillor Vince Badalati, said that Council’s Lunar New Year Festival is a fantastic way of showcasing the cultures that make the Georges River area a unique place to live, work and visit.

“The Lunar New Year Festival is the biggest event on the Georges River cultural calendar and continues to grow in popularity every year,” said Councillor Badalati.

“We are lucky to live in an area that boasts such a strong multicultural community with more than 40% of Georges River residents born overseas, and the Lunar New Year Festival is a place where people from all over Sydney can come and be a part of the rich cultural tapestry that makes up the local area.”

“I would like to thank Chemist Warehouse for supporting this great local event, and the other event sponsors who have made it possible for us to bring this event to the Georges River area once again.”
