Council successfully pursues resident for illegally dumping waste

15/05/2017

Georges River Council has successfully prosecuted a resident for illegally dumping household waste in the local government area.

Appearing in the Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday 9 May 2017, the resident pleaded guilty for transporting and adding household waste to a pile of waste that had been legally placed by a resident as part of a Council organised clean up.

The resident has been ordered to pay a fine and Council’s legal costs.

Council places a strong emphasis on combating illegal dumping and will actively investigate instances of illegal dumping and take legal action against people found to be illegally dumping materials. This includes placing waste on other residents’ scheduled clean up piles.

All members of the community are reminded that it is against the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, for any individual or group to transport waste to a place that cannot be lawfully used as a waste facility.

The maximum penalty for an individual if found to be illegally dumping materials is $250,000.

Should any resident see people illegally dumping waste or see items that have been illegally dumped, they are strongly encouraged to contact Council and provide any information.
