Council successfully pursues individual for illegal dumping

16/06/2017

Georges River Council has successfully prosecuted Mr Matthew Webber for illegally dumping household waste within the local government area.

Appearing in the Sutherland Local Court on 14 June 2017, Mr Webber pleaded guilty for the transporting and illegal dumping of household waste next to charity bins in Kogarah.

He has been ordered to pay a total fine of $7,000 including Council’s legal costs.

This is Council’s second successful prosecution against an individual for illegally dumping waste since May 2017.

Council places a strong emphasis on combating illegal dumping and will actively investigate and take legal action against people found to be illegally dumping materials. This includes the placing of waste next to charity bins.

It is against the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, for any individual or group to transport waste to a place that cannot be lawfully used as a waste facility.

The maximum penalty for an individual found to be illegally dumping is $250,000.

Should any resident see people illegally dumping waste or items that have been illegally dumped, you are strongly encouraged to contact Council and provide any information you can.
